Location

Ruella Endurance Stables are at about 900m asl, in the hamlet of Colle San Vito, part of Tornimparte, a municipality formed by several districts. The Tornimparte exit of the A25 Roma-L’Aquila-Teramo motorway is just 8km from the equestrian club. The village originates from the Mediaeval Rocca San Vito, one of the castles whose residents participated in the foundation of the city of Aquila in 1254, building the church of San Vito and the 99 Cannelle fountain. The club has a lovely view of the scattered hamlets that make up Tornimparte, as far as the vast Aquila plain with Amiternum archaeological site and the boundary of the Gran Sasso d’Italia mountain range, with the largest national park in Abruzzo.

About us and what we do

Ruella Endurance Stables are FISE-affiliated with endurance qualification and are managed by Giovanni Di Battista, a Level 3 endurance instructor and ride leader, with the help of his son Giovanni, a vet and endurance instructor for sporting merit (equivalent to Level 2), and daughter Simona, a preliminary riding instructor. Both Carlo and Simona have taken first place in Italian, European and world Endurance championships. Many years of competing in the United Arab Emirates persuaded the owners to give the equestrian club an English name, combining it with the name of the Ruella torrent that cuts across the grassy slopes where the stables are located. In addition to the riding school and endurance competitions, the club organizes horseback excursions and trekking in the surrounding areas at mid-altitude, on the many trails that follow the ancient roads through stunning natural landscapes, towards L’Aquila and Gran Sasso, the Campo Felice plain, Sirente–Velino Park and Montagne della Duchessa Park in neighbouring Lazio.

Horseback itineraries in the surrounding area, along country and mountain roads, lead to charcoal piles in the woods, active until a few decades ago, then to villages, ruined castles and places of great natural, historical, anthropological, demographic and ethnological interest.
